Portrait of Charles White: Teacher, Artist, Legacy Completed!

Greetings, all,

I’m thrilled to announce that my portrait painting of the legendary artist and educator, Professor Charles White, was completed on October 17, 2025.

This portrait is number 16 of 25 in my ongoing Black Male Artist Professor series — a collection dedicated to celebrating the creative excellence, resilience, and cultural impact of influential Black artists and educators. I’m grateful to continue developing this series, which highlights those who have shaped the visual arts through their vision, mentorship, and dedication.

Charles White (1918–1979) was an acclaimed American artist, muralist, and educator known for his powerful, humanistic portrayals of African American life and history. His masterful drawings, paintings, and prints captured the dignity, strength, and beauty of Black identity. White taught at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, mentoring generations of artists who went on to influence contemporary art and culture. His work remains a cornerstone of African American art history.

This portrait, painted by me, Ligel Lambert, is both a personal tribute and a continuation of White’s legacy — honoring his enduring influence on art, education, and the representation of Black identity in visual culture.
