Greetings, everyone,
The portrait painting of Mark Thomas Gipson is coming together beautifully, and its development truly energizes me. With the background now complete, I have set the stage for a compelling and layered artistic process. This composition is filled with symbolic elements that reflect both my work and Gipson’s journey, along with his professional contributions and creative ethos within our society through his art and teaching. Mark Thomas Gibson is an American visual artist & professor working in painting, print, ink, and watercolor. Gibson's work explores Black representation in the United States using the medium of comics.
Symbolism in the Background
One of the most engaging aspects of this piece is the careful integration of symbolism into the background. These visual elements are not just decorative; they are intentionally placed to create an abstract narrative that reflects ongoing discussions from the Black Male Artist Professor Series that I am completing.

Career Milestones: Layered geometric forms trace pivotal conversations about visibility and leadership. Each shift in color temperature and compositional rhythm is a nod to transitions, and these subtle yet deliberate choices echo the trajectory of a figure who has consistently pushed boundaries.
Academic and Community Influence: Gipson’s dedication to mentorship and education is embedded in the composition through architectural and structural references that align with his role as a professor and head of the Painting Program at Temple University.
Next Steps
With the background now finished, I will shift my focus to the underpainting and foreground details. I have already sketched his likeness on top of the geometric background. My goal is to ensure that every element interacts harmoniously—foreground and background will weave together to create a cohesive statement. Although the background will remain flat, this piece will not only celebrate Mark Thomas Gipson’s contributions but also explore abstraction’s ability to convey history, identity, and vision.
Stay tuned for the next phase of this process. I look forward to sharing the evolution of this work as it transforms into a vibrant, symbolic portrait of an individual whose creative influence continues to resonate.
Thank you,
Ligel – 2025
